Here some tips for an inspiring and cheap Lisbon adventure! 1. Lisbon's modern hostels are some of the hippest and cheapest places to stay in Lisbon. Save money with Portuguese breakfast,internet and on-site kitchens. Well located for walking to Lisbon center attractions and Lisbon nightlife areas. 3. Excellent Portuguese food at low prices - all around Lisbon! Clearly marked prices/no hidden extras except tax. Portuguese traditions include Tipping - a sign of appreciation not a service charge. Part of the restaurant culture of Portugal is to serve bread/cheese etc at the start of the meal. They are not free but you are not obliged to eat them either! House wine always available in full/half bottles/jugs. Locals eat from a selection of lunchtime Pratos do Dia (Today's Dishes) from 4 Euros for a mini prato -7.50 Euros for a full plate. One dish often serves 2 people and sharing is normal. Half portions are great for children.
The Alfama is a good area for cheaper restaurants.
Baixa has cheap traditional Portuguese restaurants in Rua dos Correios and Rua dos Douradores. Alfama is good for famous Lisbon grilled sardines. In Bairro Alto compare prices of trendy restaurants and eat where the locals eat. Calcado do Combro between Bairro Alto and Bica is cheaper. Lisbon cafes have cheap and delicious snacks on display plus toasted sandwiches. Excellent picnic food or a light lunch combined with cheap and hearty Portuguese soup. Avoid Chiado cafes with expensive Portuguese breakfasts - there are popular cafes on every street serving croissants, Portuguese cakes and thick-sliced toast. Lisboa Card from tourist offices/kiosks gives free Lisbon transport & free entry to state-run Lisbon attractions with up to 50% discounts on others. 5. State-run Lisbon attractions are free on Sunday until 14.00h - good for short and cheap Lisbon breaks and trips to Belem Portuguese monuments - Coach Museum also has a program of free cafe-concerts in the afternoon.6. Cheap Lisbon travel with a green Viva Card. You get this when you buy your first ticket at metro stations/ kiosks. The card costs 50 cts on the price of the first ticket. After that you zap it up and use it on all Lisbon transport including, Santa Justa Elevator,Trams and train to Belem and Lisbon beaches.
The Centro Cultural de Belem has a wondeful Art collection which has free entrance. The terrace cafe is also a great place to hang out and take in the lovely views of the river Tajus.
7. Avoid costly river Tagus cruises and use your Cheap-Lisbon travel card for on a river bus from Cais Sodre Station to Cashillas. You get panoramic city views, cheaper seafood, an award winning and historic tall ship and wild Lisbon Beaches on a bus from the terminal. Or watch the boats for the price of a coffee from the balcony of Cais do Sodre Ferry Terminal cafe. 8. For some Cheap Lisbon nightlife Lisbon's hostels have a vibrant scene with impromptu evenings. Some hostels organize events and film viewings. FNAC in Chiado has a program of free Portuguese music. Bairro Alto nightlife starts around 22.00 Fridays/Saturdays hang out with hip Portuguese young people also on tight budgets. Head for Rua Norte with small bars, music/book stores, tattoo parlors and original clothing stores. Alfama is quieter with impromptu Lisbon Fado music in small bars on atmospheric street. Avoid Fado venues who make up for free entry with high food/drink prices. Popular Lisbon nightlife area Docas in Alcantara has night time action with riverside bars/discos for warm summer nights. Also for warm summer evenings - Lisbon terrace cafes - inexpensive Lisbon romance with reasonably priced late night drinks/food. Our favorite is Graca Mirador. Or simply hang out and take in Chiado for a late night mix of European cafe life and laid back scene with Lisbon bohemians, intellectuals and students. 9. Shopping in traditional markets is one of the weekly Portuguese customs. Lisbon famous flea market - Feira da Ladra is near St Vincent de Fora Church on Tuesdays/Saturdays. Pick up cut-price curiosities and collectibles for souvenirs. The cavernous market hall opposite Cais do Sodre Station has traditional Portuguese Food products at market prices and is a great place to browse. 10. Lisbon coast for low-cost days at the beach - beach bars and stylish day/night time scene with cafes and bistros with cheapish dishes. Oeiras Marina is an attractive location day or night - decked cafes overlooking a yacht filled harbor. Laid back and unpretentious with a range of food/drink venues and prices. Nearby INATEL state-run cheap cafe and restaurant, outdoor terrace - popular with locals enjoying sea views to 25th April Bridge and passing ships.
