Historic 5 star Luxury Hotels

These 17th and 18th century palaces are Portuguese monuments to a glorious maritime past. Typically they have baroque and rococo architecture and historic gardens.

Former aristocratic homes such as the Pestana Palace Hotel Lisbon and the Lapa Palace Hotel Lisbon display wealth accumulated by Portuguese royalty at the high point of Portuguese history. Combined with a visit to Lisbon’s Coach Museum in Belem it will leave you in no doubt about the luxury and style that the noble class of Lisbon.

These 5 star Lisbon Hotels appeal to couples looking for luxury and some Lisbon romance.

They will organize a Lisbon wedding down to the rings and rose petals. If you are interested in fine art and Portuguese history you will enjoy the antique paintings of Lisbon aristocrats and traditional Portuguese furniture and antiques. The gold leaf ballrooms and boudoirs are also the backdrop to Lisbon's romantic and political stories. For families with young children and adolescents there are special activity programs. Adults are offered jet lag rejuvenation treatments and chauffeur driven shopping and cultural tours.

16th and 17th century Convents

Alternatively, you can stay in stone built former convent with rooms overlooking courtyard gardens. The convents were built near their parish churches and were self sustaining religious and farming communities. The nuns also provided charitable and social support to Lisbon's poor and sick.

Their influence lives on as renowned cake and desert makers. The Portuguese recipes made use of the eggs from the convent farms. Many of the deserts and cakes in Lisbon’s restaurants and cake shops use the nun's original recipes. These sweet and delicious deserts traditionally combine egg yolk with sugar, lemon milk and ground almonds. Cinnamon was brought back from the Indies by Portuguese explorers in the 17 C, adding a delicious touch to the recipes.

In the Belem region of the city, it was the monks who stole the show with their secret recipe for their delicious tarts "Pasteis de Nata". It's Impossible to describe how good they are. Just try them at the traditional Pastelaria de Belem, Lisbon's most celebrated cake shop.

To stay in one of a Lisbon’s convents however, is to be close to the historic and feminine pulse of the city. I recommend York House Lisbon, former convent and a bit of an institution here. You can get a room overlooking a courtyard garden with traditional Portuguese antique furniture and a homely and tranquil atmosphere. This is for visitors who will enjoy being seeped in a history. The two hotel buildings are located near the Museum of Ancient Art in one of my favorite historial parts of the, the Lapa.

Fin do Seculo Lisbon Hotels

These are 4 star and 5 star luxury Lisbon Hotels with 18th and 19th century Lisbon elegance. The buildings, part of Lisbon’s architectural heritage with a strong French influence as well as Portuguese style, take you back to Lisbon’s romantic past. Walk the same streets and drink in the same cafes as Lisbon's writers, artists and poets.

These hotels have individual Portuguese owners or are part of a small Portuguese hotel group. Some of the renovation has been carried out by celebrated Portuguese designers, a chance to see Portuguese Classic and Contemporary Design. Some have fused Minimalism and Colonial style. Most upmarket hotels often have public bars so you can watch Lisbon's trendy professional and artistic class socialize.

I would recommend, for style and location, the five star Barrio Alto Hotel near the Chiado with its bohemian outdoor cafes and designer shops. oAlternatively, there is the central four star Hotel Brittania, which is the only surviving art deco hotel and has been recently restored. If you like Art Deco or simply looking at beautiful jewelery, don't leave town without seeing one of Lisbon's secrets. The work of Art Deco master craftsman and artist Rene Lalique. Fine examples of his jewelery are held at the Gulbenkian Collection. They are inspiring and breathtaking in their beauty.

Lisbon Boutique Hotels

A number of beautifully renovated historical buildings stand out on some of Lisbon's historic streets. Among these, the new award winning boutique hotels run by Portuguese families or Portuguese hotel groups. Renovated and designed by celebrated Portuguese architects and artists.

I love that they have managed to stay true to the character of the historic buildings they occupy. The hotels range in style from 18th century Portuguese Classic through to Contemporary Portuguese design. They offer a chance to combine the city's traditional lifestyle with an intimate atmosphere. You could try As Janelas Verdes - a first class inn with 18th century Portuguese Classic design next to the Museum of Ancient Art.

The Heritage Hotel on Avenida Liberdade, Lisbon's main boulevard will give you an insight in to Portugal's Contemporary Design and Lisbon's award winning designers.
