Lisbon Restaurants - An Insider Guide

Lisbon portugal Lisbon Restaurants - one of the really great things about the City and the Coast. Lisbon is full of fantastic places to eat. There are places to suit every budget, it is easy to have a full meal with a drink for ten Euros, or you can find great gourmet food and amazing seafood in Town and Beach Side.

We think everybody should explore themselves and we are always interested in your discoveries, these are just some places we think you might enjoy.

Seafood is the big thing in Lisbon, and in summer grilled fish, squid and prawns are just great. The Portuguese love fish and eat a lot of it. There are many different types, Cherne, Besugo and Tuna can be recommended. They are crazy about Bachalau which is cod that has been salted and then rinsed for one or two days. lisbon restaurant Try to eat in restaurants where Lisboetas eat. They are the people who are not wearing shorts and carrying cameras ! Portuguese people each lunch out most days so they are always looking for good places to eat. Good places don't thrust their menus at you as you pass. they don't usually translate the menu so if you want to eat well learn the Portuguese terms and a few useful Portuguese phrases. Most Lisbon Restaurants have lunch plates at around 7 Euros or less. Many of the Lisbon Museums have good Restaurants. The dining area in the Museu de Azulejos is very attractive and the food is good.

Lisbon Restaurants Expensive

Tavares - Rua Miseracordia Chiado

This is one of the oldest Lisbon restaurants and one of the most expensive. Unless you have bags of money this is not an everyday place. Full of old fashioned elegance the food is very good but not unique, you are paying for the ambiance. As close as it gets to old world splendor in Lisbon, so for a special occasion to celebrate it could be the place for you.

Gambrinus - R Portas de Santo Antao

Another Lisbon institution. a seafood haven. the restaurant is more expensive than the bar. You can gorge on every type of fresh seafood but it isn't cheap.

Bica do Sapato

Part of the Lux complex part owned by John Markovitch. Very trendy. You can eat outside and watch the boats go by. The food is trendy gourmet light, you pay to be a part of the scene. the best nightclub in Lisbon - Lux is the next stop for diners here.

Lisbon Restaurants - Upmarket

Lisbon Restaurants are usually good value the following are more expensive than average but not overpriced considering the food and ambiance.

Bocca is one of the few Lisbon Restaurants everyone seems to like. Romantic and Stylish. Very central near Marques de Pombal and Avenida Liberdade in Rua Rodrigo da Fonseca, 87D. The food adds modern touches to traditional portuguese cooking. There are great fish and shellfish dishes and duck, lamb and beef choices. Average 70 euros a head for dinner a little cheaper for lunch.Phone: 21 380 8383

Olivers. Rua Alecrim and Rua Teixaira Bairro Alto. Oliver is the son of one of the best known Tv chefs in portugal. These Lisbon Restaurants have a good reputation for experimentation and substance. The atmosphere is romantic and Oliver himself is very attentive. The chocolate cake is great !

Gemelli is probably the best Italian chef in town. His restaurant called simply Gemellis is on a corner of Rua Sao Bento above a market and near the Parliament buildings. A flavorsome menu of variants on Italian and Portuguese cuisine awaits. The decor is not especially exciting but the food is great and it is not expensive considering the quality of the cooking.

chpito lisbon Chapito just below the Castle - Circus School with bars and restaurants - this is a must! Good food and one of the most romantic settings. Very special.

Pap'Acorda Rua Atalaia Bairro Alto

An evening favorite for Lisboetas. It's trendy, stylish and Crowded - hard to get served but the food is good. It is a Lisbon hot spot but people complain about the service when they are not part of the in crowd. Depends how much you want to be trendy.

Charcuterie Rua Alecrim

Good choice for people who want to experiment, conservatively. The recipes are more or less traditional but have delicate touches. The dishes are not huge so don't arrive famished.

Lisboa Norte Rua do Norte

Seafood restaurant with a great reputation for flavor in the heart of the Bairro Alto.

Fabrica Largo do Rato

A good place to eat - just a little more expensive than average but it's got a nice atmosphere and the place is well run.

Nariz do Vinho Rua do Conde 75 Lapa

If you are staying in the west this is a good choice and excellent for special occasion. Really reliable for Portuguese dishes and very good wine. Conservative ambiance.

Sua Excellencia Rua do Conde 34 lapa

Another west city favorite with a light atmosphere and plants everywhere. Great flavors, traditional dishes. Fransisco the boss is eccentric and old school - he knows how to cook.

Terra one of the best vegetarian Lisbon Restaurants -Rua da Palmeira, 15, isin a lovely area of west Lisbon not far from principe Real. there are vegan options. Delightful outdoor Garden and Terrace make for a very romantic setting.

Porco Preto near Praca Flores

West of the center again. Expensive but authentic place to eat Alentejo specialty Black pig, which roams wild, eats acorns and is very tasty. All the dishes can be trusted.

Great Value

Lisbon is full of very good value restaurants. Some are exceptionally cheap but they are usually good value.

It's never hard to find a great value Lisbon Restaurants but some quarters have more than others! Calcado do Combro near Chiado is a great street with many restaurants close. Conde Barao near Santos is a must. Saldhana and Estafania near Pombal are good because there are many workers looking for cheap and filling lunches.Bairro Alto is a night time favorite but more expensive than average. Alfama has many small family restaurants. Largo do Chafariz Dentro near Lisbon Fado Museum is a good place to start. Likewise near by Rua dos Bachaleiros. Baixa is mixed with some tourist traps but plenty of good Portuguese restaurants. Eat where Lisboetas eat and you can't go wrong!

Chose well in Belem - tourists make worse value for money. You can snack reasonably in Lisbon famous Pasteis de Belem cafe.

You pay more to eat by Lisbon River Tagus and the beach restaurants can be more expensive too but follow our 2 tips which will surprise you.

Great Value Lisbon Restaurants - Listing

Picanha. Janelas Verdes, Belem

Grilled Meat with rice, chips and beans. Simple and tasty especially with a good red wine. Now also near the park in Belem. Good for determined meat-eaters looking for an alternative to grilled fish.

Portugalia. Almirante Reis, Cais Sodre, Belem etc

A reliable Lisbon-Restaurant institution and now a chain. We think it's a bit expensive for what you get but the food is fine and the restaurants are clean and stylish. Dishes are cheapish but portions small and a bit formulaic. The seafood is more expensive. A fallback choice when legs are tired.

This cafe in Praca Flores has dishes of the day at around 8 euros and is famous for snacks. Very relaxing atmosphere just west of Lisbon Center.

Ramiro

Intendente near Martim Moniz - Great value seafood in this most popular of all Lisbon Cervejarias. Always busy, be prepared to wait. Tiger prawns are amazing! Everyone finishes with a steak sandwich. Drink beer rather than wine here, like the locals!

Cascais Remo in Praca Alegria off Avenida Liberdade. Busy place full of local police from the station in the square! Soup is great and the Porco Preto is very tasty.

Rodas at Rato - Busy grill in bustling Rato quarter. Workers flock to several reasonable lunchtime restaurants.

Plan Alto Largo in Sao Sebastiao de Pedra - Restaurant in a beautiful area not far from the Court Ingles department store near Pombal. Fantastic value, varied dishes and house deserts. Desejo next door is also good.

Toma-la-da-ca Bica in Travessa do Sequero. A good cheapish restaurants with a certain class. the food is good, the atmosphere a little trendy - you can't go wrong with Portuguese dishes. We found the more cosmopolitan dishes less good.

San Antonio - Rua das Bachaleiros a place for fish just off the tourist trail between Baixa and lower Alfama. Nearby Campo de Cebollas also has reasonable grill restaurant popular with tourists enjoying outdoor dining.

Campo Matires de Patria - Garden cafe with better than average house fast food and dishes. High above Avenida Liberdad - Go up on forgotten Elevedor de Lavra! One of Lisbon's secrets and great for Families with Cheap Lisbon travel card.

Principe Real Esplanada - Busy Garden cafe in this lovely part of town and not expensive considering its upmarket quarter. Go early for lunch time specials.

By the Beach

Lisbon-Restaurants By the beach. Some beach side places are tourist traps but these are good value and have a relaxed atmosphere.

Peters - Oeiras Marina

A trendy restaurant from the Acores now established right beside the small port near lovely beaches. Day time specials are 7,50 euros. Art adorns the walls and big windows open to great views.

Inatel Cafe and Restaurant - Near Oeiras Marina - walk,jog or skate West along sea path from St Amaro Train Station! Self service with fantastic sea views. Great for families! Nearby extensive beaches, swimming pools with diving boards and bike hire.

Dom Manuel at Caxias - Get out to the beach and head to this good reasonable restaurant at the end of the village behind Caxias Train Staion! Lunchtime specials are good value or choose from the more expensive fish selection.

Praia Mar. Our favourite place for seafood is 45 minutes form Lisbon at Sesimbra. Praia Mar specializes in Crab and Lobster and has a series of mixed seafood dishes to suit all budgets. 25 - 35 euros for two people and you will be eating incredibly fresh specialties that would cost a fortune in London or Madrid.It is in the second line from the beach on the east side of town.Rua D Afonso Henriques 16.

Sesimbra is a pleasant beach resort near Setubal and the lovely Arrabida peninsular - a good day out from Lisbon and worth the journey for the food alone. Lisbon Restaurants top
