Here's a few INSIDER tips to help you have a great time!

1. Walk! It's the best way to see Lisbon - The beautiful old streets are paved with limestone mosaic & some are steep. So pack comfy sandals & don't forget your hat & sun protection.

2. Historic Lisbon Trams - take you all over the city center & out West to Belem. Plus its cheap! Famous Tram 28 is an unforgettable ride through old Lisbon and stops near to but not at Lisbon Castle. It gets packed in Summer so avoid it then with little kids. Jump on less popular but also great ride Tram 12 or Tram 25 instead. Tram 15 for Belem

If its a Short Lisbon trip - Don't miss Lisbon castle for panoramic views & top Alfama location. Plenty space for kids to run around.

3. Lisbon Taxis are reasonable even cheaper than 4 Buses tickets on short trips. Taxi from Cais Sodre Train Station to Lisbon Castle is only 5 Euros. Especially handy with young kids who find steep streets a challenge. No airport pickup charge & indispensable for finding Vacation apartments in Alfama labyrinth. Buy a Taxi Voucher at Lisbon Airport to Lisbon center to guarantee the fare.

4. Lisbon is great for a LOW-SEASON Vacation you can pick up great value Hotel DISCOUNTS & still enjoy fab weather. Stroll the streets on sunny Spring days in February or surf the waves through to October & November & for less money.

5. Take a Christmas Lisbon Shopping break in mild & bright December. Pick up original handmade or luxury gifts in traditional stores. Plus you get free Christmas Concerts & a chance to see Rossio Square beautifully lit up & smelling of roast chestnuts.

6. English is widely spoken but knowing some useful Portuguese phrases earns you a lot of good will from locals when you try out the most basic Portuguese phrases. Try our list!

7. Same with Portuguese customs! - People are formal and polite. Knowing some useful Portuguese phrases for greeting and thanks makes a lot of difference to everyone.

8. Lisbon is a safe city in comparison to many but has some pickpockets. Carry id card/payment card only and separately. Be vigilant on 28 Lisbon Tram, Lisbon Metro and avoid train to Sintra.

9. Some of the best of Lisbon is had by relaxing at Lisbon terrace cafes enjoying the panoramic views. The city has a lot of beautiful Portuguese monuments to see but find time to enjoy Lisbon's laid back atmosphere too.

10. On a short city break to Lisbon, see Lisbon's Chiado, Baixa and Alfama or maybe take an open bus city tour. Go to Belem by train or tram with views of Lisbon River Tagus. You also see Lisbon's 25th April Bridge and Lisbon Monument Cristo Rei.

Lisbon beaches are also great and if you have time relax at a beach side cafe. the train to the nearest beach at Caixias takes 15 minutes. Santa Amaro de Oeiras below is around 20 minutes from Cais Sodre.
