Portugal Beaches for Great Swimming

The Portugal Beaches are many and contrasting. In this page we look at some of the lovely areas where the crowds don't go.

The River Minho is a splendid river to swim in, wide but not too deep. There are many beaches from Caminha to Moncao and if you want contrast you can head over the bridge at Vila Nova de Cerveira for a swim and Tapas in Spain. This photo was taken in late September 2009 and the weather in Portugal was so warm swimming in the river was a delight. There is more on the traditions of this area on our Portuguese Tradirions page.

The Beautiful North

Portugal is a beautiful country and The North of Portugal - The Minho is usually considered by the Portuguese to be the loveliest region. Just over three hour driving from Lisbon brings you to breathtaking scenery and a tranquil way of living.

At Vila Praia de Ancora in the Costa Verde - Green Coast- the river meets the sea, giving plenty of opportunities for really safe swimming in the river and great surfing in the big breakers close by.

There are also lakes and mountain pools just inland by making it a great area for wild swimming. Nearby Historic Viana do Castelo has atmosperic streets, great natural swimming pools and good beach bars.

A river is often an opportunity for Portuguese Beaches. In Paredes da Coura the river winds peacefully along and there are areas to dive and safe pools for children. It is a great place for a picnic in spring. In August you may want to be part of the Paredes da Coura Rock Festival when big names like Morrisey and Nine Inch Nails hit this quiet country venue.

Over the mountain from Paredes is the river Lima and the beautiful town of Ponte de Lima which also has a safe river beach.
