Lisbon is a Southern European city on the West of the mainland, latitude 38 degrees North, longitude 9 degrees West. More Southerly than Rome and Madrid similar to Athens. The nearest US equivalent would be San Fransisco but Lisbon has a more intense sunlight. In general it has a benign climate rarely very cold or very hot. In Winter there are few frosts, in Summer sea breezes cool the air. The rainfall falls between October and May and there are rarely droughts.

FEBRUARY average high 16 low 9.Spring comes early. February is nearly always a month with some really good weather and also of course some rain. Blossom appears on the trees. People start eating out again but with jackets over their shoulders. There are no guarantees but it can be a great month to visit. Cool enough to see the Lisbon Monuments and warm enough to enjoy Portuguese Breakfast in the sun. In a week expect some rain and maybe a day or two warm enough for the beach. At night there are parties to celebrate Carnival.

MARCH average high 17 low 9Expect some Spring Showers in March and some lovely sunny days. The gardens are looking fuller now and eating out becomes normal.Young people start going to the beach after school. Nights can still be cool so come prepared. It is a good month to visit if you want to see the Lisbon sights and don't mind the odd shower.A good month to visit the monuments and museums of Belem or climb the hills of the Alfama and Graca.

APRIL Average high 19 Average low 11.April can be so beautiful in Lisbon as the gardens begin to bloom and the sun is warm and soft on the white stones of the buildings. There is rain for sure so you have to be prepared for showers. The temperatures are perfect for those who want to get around the city. There will also be days when a trip to the beach is possible and it is a great time for doing things with kids like visiting the Zoo and The Oceanarium. Easter has its special Portuguese customs and there are sweet almonds, chocolate and Portuguese sweet bread to delight the taste buds.A good time to visit the Estufas, the beautiful gardens in Edward VII Park.

Late May is a great time to enjoy the street life of downtown Lisbon
MAY average high 22 low 13. May can be divided into two, the first part is wetter with conditions similar to April the second part of the month is usuaully warmer. The sun is becoming hotter now. You will need to take a break after walking to relax with a coffee or an ice cream. Kids will love going to the beach as well as the Zoo. The evenings are long and enjoying a glass of wine or a cocktail beneath the stars on a balmy evening at Docas West Lisbon is delightful.

JUNE average high 24 low 16The perfect month to visit. Not much rain and the sun gentle and warm. It is still possible to do a lot of sightseeing in Lisbon but it is best to plan for time relaxing. Nightime temperatures are great and young people go out on the streets having fun till the morning. It is a great time for taking photos of the city with it's special white light. You are sure to be able to get to the beach and the water is getting warmer so the children can really enjoy themselves. There are parties in the streets and its the best time to eat grilled sardines. Be sure to visit the Alfama during the St Anthony Celebrations it is unforgettable.

JULY average high 27 low 17. It is summer now. If you love the sun it is a good time to enjoy the summer party atmosphere with concerts and festivals. You don't have to think about rain and you are sure to want to go to the beach and the pool. Fried fish tastes great in the waterside restaurants. Early mornings are good for visiting the lisbon sights but you are sure to want to relax by lunchtime. A siesta in one of the lovely Lisbon parks like Campo Matires de Patria above Avenida Liberdad is a good idea after lunch.

Average high 28 low 17. It is really holiday time now and it can be hot. The best idea is to combine Lisbon with the beach. There are lovely places just outside the city.Visit the Monuments and Museums in the mornings and lie in the sun during the afternoon. The children will really enjoy the beaches and parents can share visits to the town. It is great to eat Salad and Seafood with Portuguese Sangria to wash it down. Nighttime in the City or the beach is buzzing, it is great to be on the streets at three in the morning with the party still in full swing.

From Cais Sodre to Cascais there are laid back Beach side bars and Marina areas. This is Peters at Oeiras a great place to hang out on a warm summers day.
September Average high 26 low 17.
A little cooler now and there may even be a shower. It is still a great month to combine city and beach. A good month for exploring around the city and getting outside to Sintra which is suddenly less busy and the Western beaches beyond Cascais.
The city seems much quieter and people are back to work and the atmosphere is more traditional. There are wine festivals around Lisbon in the Alentejo and Estramadura regions. A good opportunity to try some of the excellent fruity reds and fresh white wines.

October
OCTOBER average high 22 low 14. Like June a perfect month to visit. It could rain so be prepared but also you could be spending days in bright sunshine in town or on the beach. Lisbon is beautiful as autumn begins and the light on the leaves turning orange and deep red is magical. It is a good month for getting to the Museums and Galleries. You will still be enjoying grilled fish outdoors in the sun. Mussels and Oysters are especially good at this time of year. At the end of the month it is usually wetter so be prepared to carry an umbrella.
November
NOVEMBER Average high 18 low 13. The days can still be beautiful in November but evenings come sooner. The parks are beautiful now as the leaves fall from the trees. Visit Estrella or Principe Real. The sun is lower and it is a great time for taking photographs. It is also a good time for exploring the Lisbon atmosphere, the melancholy charms of Fado, the poetry of Pessoa. There can be rain so be prepared. A good month to see a film in the evenings at the Cinemateca Portuguesea. A walk in the Gulbenkian Gardens in Autumn is a must and a visit to the Gulbenkian Museum is one of the joys of Lisbon come rain or shine.

December
DECEMBER Average high 14 low 9. Christmas comes to Lisbon. Everyone seems to be in the Chiado buying presents for the children. It is a great time to visit if you enjoy the atmosphere of this season. People talk about how much milder the Christmases are now than they used to be. Although 2008 was pretty cold the years since 2000 have seen temperatures of 21 degrees in December. People go to eat at teh seafood restaurants west of Lisbon.Best to come prepared for chilly nights. A good opportunuty to warm the blood by trying some Vintage Port in the famous Port House in the Chiado.
January
JANUARY Average High 14 low 8. Even just from the averages you see that Lisbon is not a cold city. There are usually a few nights when the thermometer falls near zero but these are rare. There will be rain for sure in January but when the sun shines you can often eat outside. When it is colder try the hearty Portuguese kale soup and Portuguese Pot roast. The New Year comes to Lisbon with Parties and Festivities and plenty of opportunities to try Portuguese Home Cooking especially Portuguese Sweet Bread, traditional in the holiday seasons. A good time for visiting Galleries and at night watching Benfica or Sporting play top quality football. It is quiet in January so a good time to see the real Lisbon.
